PENNY

PENNY  - The love affair that would change my life

“They’re here!”

We had been waiting since early morning well into the afternoon for them.  It’s October 14, of 2020.  Most of us just met in person after a multitude of emails and zoom gatherings.

But we all have something in common:  the rescue of four horses from a killpen in Texas. Screenwriter and director, Ashley Avis, who had just established “The Wild Beauty Foundation”   [1]  organized the rescue from her home in southern California.

A huge horse trailer had backed down the access road and through the gate of Casari Ranch, directly into their antique apple orchard.  The driver, Melanie, hopped out of her truck, stretched, and ambled towards the back of the trailer.

Casey and Ariana, stood ready, arms and hands crammed with halters and lead ropes.

Whatever it was I did to help, (I can’t recall!) it was a pleasure.  I felt like I made some real connections with my fellow “rescuers.”

One thing I do remember was the dramatic entrance of the sheep and goats!  “ A real EGE moment,”  I said aloud, more to myself than anything.  They shifted the energies from so serious to more lighthearted at least for a few minutes.

I’m amused that even Ashley adopted the name of our coltnotfilly, Little Joe Longfellow!  According to the rescue paperwork, this guy was supposed to be a 2-year-old filly.   We watched him exit the trailer and all of us noticed he had a penis shaft and the awkward look of less than a yearling.  He also had a runny nose, so, not a gelding and he was sickly.

Only one person saw what happened inside the trailer.  We were told the horses were not even halter trained, which proved untrue.

As the doors swung open …. Freedom!   Evidently the pony leapt over and around the other horses in her rush to be the first out.

This is our first of many beginnings.  Her killpen name was Surya, written on her transfer papers.  She looked like a small Arabian, especially in the videos of her we watched prior to adding her adorable self last minute to the trailer heading our way. It turned out we had to force the issue and pay some extra.

Our first thought, best thought was to get rid of her killpen name.  Because of her chestnut color, we called her Copper Penny, or simply, Penny.

Luna, Rosalie and Little Joe have their own stories.  This one is dedicated to the pony with a big heart.
